Patriarch's Blues, Victor Krumenacher, 2008
but they all called me Johnny. It wasn't until a 1986 tour with Long John Baldry, I started using the name I was born with, as I came back to the blues.
I loved his boogie stuff, especially Boogie Chillun',
I had the house gig at JJs, every Sunday and Monday Night in San Jose California, and John Lee Hooker would often come and hear me do a set or two, dressed to the nines
in his white blues hat. He was pretty shy and wouldn't say much. I got a call from Deacon Jones to do the piano on this record, and was thrilled to be part of his recorded legacy.
I hear much of his influence on my voice, and when my stuff gets a bit too slick I go back to the boogie man, and try to keep it simple
His voice and rhythms take me back home to a wonderful time growing up in the Delta,
Click the player below, and hear my piano on the track, "we'll meet again" very different from John Lee Hooker, but beautiful
John Lee Sanders did these sessions with some star studded guests, Carlos Santana, Van Morrison, Charles Brown, and Booker T.
One of JLH finest '90s recordings, Chill Out balances the guitar-glitz of Carlos Santana's guest shot on the karmic title cut with a handful of profoundly deep Hooker solo performances. Among those are new versions of his standards "Tupelo" and "Annie Mae," and the soulful "If You've Never Been in Love," where expert slide-man Roy Rogers provides subtle accompaniment to Hooker's spontaneous storytelling. The band numbers that bookend the album are weak, relying on Hooker's strong vocal presence to overcome sketchy writing. Van Morrison, pianist Charles Brown, and M.G.'s leader Booker T. Jones also lend a hand. But Hooker doesn't need anybody's help to get to the passionate heart of his blues.

I Frist
opened for Tower of Power back in 1974, after a
few years at North Texas State University.
I did the Horn Arrangements on "this Type of Funk" in the clip you can hear below, and many of the background vocals on the CD. I've followed TOP over the years and have become friends with many of the guys in the Band.
Back in 1991, I started a band with Tower of Power Drummer, David Garibaldi, and Guitarist Jeff Tamelier. David plays all of the drum tracks on my first CD, World Blue.
Since this Cd, I've done lots of projects with Tower of Power founder, Doc Kupka, who plays Bari Sax with the band, and writes much of their hit material.
It was a great honor to record with the greatest Funk Horn Band of all time.

We reconnected in the Bay Area, and I was added to this amazing lineup on this record, with Dr. John, David Torkanowski, and Bernie Worrel, plus a killer Rhythm section.
Preaching the Gospel of New Orleans music for the last 30 years, it doesn't get much better than playing with the guy who created New Orleans Funk
Drummer Joseph "Ziggy" Modeliste was one of the original members of the Meters, a pioneering funk band based in New Orleans. He is widely acknowledged as the innovator of a style of playing known as second-line funk. As a solo artist, he released the album Zigaboo.Com in 2000, about two decades after the Meters' broke up. Modeliste self-produced the release, which was issued by the indie label that he founded, JZM Records. He also appeared on numerous Meters' recordings, as well as others by such artists as the Rolling Stones, Harry Connick Jr., Aaron Neville, Keith Richards, Professor Longhair, John Fogerty, Dr. John, Robert Palmer, Allen Toussaint, Patti LaBelle, and Lee Dorsey, among others. A New Orleans native, the drummer makes his home in Berkeley, CA. He went home to the Crescent City in 1997 and 1998 to perform at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. ~ Linda Seida, All Music Guide

Recorded in Hamburg Germany, at the Fabrik Club, one of the best clubs in Europe.
We showed up at the gig, and were told that this was a live radio broadcast, but the band was so tight, it was just another great night on the road.
Baldry was a great inspiration and mentor to me, and helped be get my first record deal in Germany that year.
Here's a video I did in Germany with Long John Baldry on one of our many tours
Much of the preproduction for this CD was done in my home studio in Oakland as Angela
roughed out her songwriting ideas with piano, vocals, and other midi tracks, of course, all the tracks here are live at Laughing Tiger Studios in Marin County California. I'm doing saxes, grand piano and Hammond B3, and do some live background vocals with Maria Muldaur. I met Angela through my work in the house band at her club in northern Californa, Rancho Nicasio.
She and her husband Bob Brown have done so much for me and my career in the short time I've known them, and have helped get my music heard by so many of the greats in the industry. This is one of my favorite albums I've had the honor of working on. Angela helped build the Austin Music scene and you can hear her story in the great documentary
about Clifford Antone, in the new dvd documentary, Antone's home of the blues

Musicians: Angela Strehli (vocals), Mighty Mike Schermer (guitar), Gary Vogenson (guitar), Steve Ermann (bass), Paul Revelli (drums). Guest artists: John Lee Sanders (piano, Hammond B-3, tenor sax), Maria Muldaur & Marcia Ball (vocals on Blue Highway), Paul Thorn (vocal on track # 3), Larry Batiste, Claytoven Richardson, Donnie Bledsoe (background vocals on tracks #5, 6, 7, 9), Tom Duarte (acoustic guitar on track # 8)., Stevie Ray Vaughn on C.O.D>
Singer/songwriter Angela Strehli has been a fixture on the Austin blues scene for decades now, but as her first studio album in seven years demonstrates, her range extends beyond the blues and well into country, soul, and roots rock. At 60 years old, her voice is strong and slightly gritty around the edges, and her delivery is powerful and authoritative. She manages to take material like the Ann Peebles classic "Slipped, Tripped and Fell in Love" and Ernie K-Doe's "Hello My Lover" and make it all her own (though she has help on the latter from singer Paul Thorn), and her originals are mostly quite good as well. (Her tribute to the late Stevie Ray Vaughan, titled "SRV," is sweet but maybe just a bit on the overly sentimental side.) Fellow blueswomen Marcia Ball and Maria Muldaur join her on the rollicking title song. But the album's finest moment comes at the very end; the last track is a live version of the old blues song "C.O.D.," performed by Strehli with Vaughan and his band, Double Trouble, at Carnegie Hall in 1985. The combination of her powerful voice and his blockbusting guitar is amazing. Recommended.
The first song, "Austin's Home Of The Blues," is dedicated to Antone's, Strehli's base of operations from the early 1970s. The title song, "Blue Highway," finds the singer in the company of her old pals Maria Muldaur and Marcia Ball. It goes without saying that the song is a winner. The band is especially keen with nice work from Mike Schermer and guest piano-man John Lee Sanders.
Angela Strehli is a native of Lubbock, Texas and an expert in the history of the Lone Star state's blues history. Her composition, "SRV," is a touching tribute to her late friend Stevie Ray Vaughan, another Texan.
We liked the singer's "I Don't Know Why." Strehli absolutely wails and the band backs her up in style.
Gospel fans aren't forgotten when the singer pays tribute to Inez Andrews with the rousing "Lord, Don't Move The Mountain." It ends much too soon!
The closer is from a live concert at Carnegie Hall in 1985 with Stevie Ray Vaughan. Nobody will object if you crank up the volume. We did! Hopefully, Angela Strehli won't make us wait another seven years for her next release.
Tracks: Austin's Home Of The Blues, Blue Highway, Hello My Lover, SRV, Slipped Tripped And Fell In Love, I Don't Know Why, Lord Don't Move The Mountain, Headed South, Always Love You, C.O.D.

"Linda’s pure soprano and meticulous professionalism make her a favorite with children and parents alike."
I did many CDs with Linda Arnold, one of the great children's music artists.
I co-produced/ and co-wrote this one with Linda, and we received a Grammy nomination for best Children's recording. It was funded with a grant from the Monterey Bay Aquarium to coincide with the Splash Zone Exhibit, to teach children about taking care of the sea, and it's amazing connection to the planet. this was a great learning experience for me, not only about African and Caribbean Rhythms, but Ocean Habitats, Penguins, and all sorts of Aquatic life in the sea.
Fun, educational lyrics with lovely Caribbean, Cuban, and South African rhythms. "One afternoon at the beginning of this project, I stood in the cliffs overlooking Monterey Bay, I suddenly realized how little I knew about the ocean and the many animals that call it their home. After many joyful months of working on this album and 18 songs later, I have become wonderfully familiar with a colorful cast of marvelous sea creatures. Learning about marine life has given me a much deeper appreciation of the ocean. I hope these songs will inspire listeners of all ages to continue to discover and celebrate the wonders of the sea."

I loved doing this CD, thank you Victor for
having me doing the background vocals
I did all of the background vocals on selected tracks, including all 5 harmony parts. Victor wanted me to re-create the sound of the Jordanaires, the Gospel Group on the early Elvis recordings, and from all accounts, everyone was pleased with the results.
Derk Richardson kindly gave me a pick for his MVPs of the Bay Area for 2008. I'm humbled and grateful:
"What do you do when your father and stepfather die within three weeks of each other? If you're Krummenacher you gather your friends and band mates from such projects as Camper Van Beethoven and Monks of Doom and record a bluesy classic rock album that is both heart wrenching and exhilarating. "Patriarch's Blues" (Magnetic) weaves a poignant program of originals, old blues and songs reworked from the repertoires of James McMurtry and June Tabor and the poetry of W.H. Auden. MVPs Jonathan Segal, David Immergluck, Greg Lisher, Doug Hilsinger, Paul Olguin, John Hanes, Alison Faith Levy, John Lee Sanders and John R. Burr help steady the ship."
